Last year ‘Digital Fortress’ and ‘Deception Point’ had featured in the list of the novels that I had read. I had liked them and hence I had praised them and their author, Dan Brown through couple of my blogposts.
If you too admire Dan Brown then this week would have been very exciting for you especially if you happened to be in India. Dan Brown who was named one of the ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’ by TIME Magazine, was in New Delhi for his lecture at a renowned annual literary event and then at NCPA, Mumbai. Seeing the reception and hospitality of people here that he received on his long-due India tour, Brown stated that “He feels like he has come home”.
During his lecture at premier multi-auditorium complex of Government of India to a packed crowd at Siri Fort in New Delhi, Dan Brown, he says that he grew up watching religion and science live in the same house. Brown was born to a religious mother who ran the church choir and a mathematics teacher and textbook writer. During his lecture Brown said that, “At 13, I realised that both science and scripture posed plenty of contradictions. I wondered which story is true”. He soon began to understand science and religion as two languages trying to tell the same story. Brown further says, “Science focuses on the answers while religion savours the questions”.
Dan Brown placed by Forbes magazine at No. 12 on their year 2005 “Celebrity 100” list has written and published six novels so far and has sold over 200 million copies in 52 different languages across the world. Dan Brown’s novels feature scintillating stories on secret societies, conspiracy theories, symbology, cryptography, etc. The novels authored by Dan Brown include Digital Fortress (1998), Angels & Demons (2000), Deception Point (2001), The Da Vinci Code (2003, is Brown’s most popular as well as his most controversial book till date became a bestseller, going to the top of the New York Times Best Seller list during its first week of release, The Lost Symbol (2009) and Inferno (2013). The Robert Langdon series of his is currently the seventh highest selling series of all times. Two of these novels, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, have been adapted into films. In 2004 all four of his novels were on the New York Times list. Brown is currently at work on a new book as well as a film version of his most recent novel, ‘The Lost Symbol’.
When a man of Dan Brown’s stature, reach and intelligence states ‘science and religion as two languages trying to tell the same story’ it reinforces and reconfirms the very fact that science and religion are indeed two sides of the same coin. It definitely mocks those so called ‘intellectuals’ who are trying to raise questions about spirituality and create doubts in the minds of the common people.
I have personally read all the novels of Dan Brown. I feel his novels are good pointers for a person interested in reading about secret societies, conspiracy theories, symbology, cryptography, etc.
